Chapter several years later: [Morning Light‚ Time for Two]
Sunday morning. The light streaming in through the window gently illuminated the kitchen table.
Saya was turning the pages of the newspaper while holding a steaming mug with both hands. Next to her‚ Yuto was spreading butter on his toast. “Where should we go today?” “Hmm‚ how about going to the sea for the first time in a while?” “Sounds good. I wonder if that observatory is still there.” “I’m sure it is. It’s our ‘beginning place‚’ after all.” The ring was still shining on Saya’s left hand. The silver band she received that night had become slightly tarnished over time. But she liked it that way‚ as if it were proof of the years that had passed. “Hey‚ Yuto-kun.” “Yeah?” “I want to tell the me from back then: If you just start walking‚ someone will be by your side.” “…I want to tell the me from that night: I’m glad I found the courage.” The two laughed together as they cleared the dishes. Weekends were no longer something special. They had become a part of everyday life. But for the two of them‚ it was still a “memory of the beginning.” As they got in the car and drove toward the sea‚ Saya suddenly looked out the window. The autumn wind rustled the trees‚ and the distant sky was clear. “Hey‚ if the me from back then saw this‚ she’d be surprised.” “I think she’d cry a little and laugh a little.” “…Yeah. I’m also crying a little and laughing a little at the me I am now.” The sea came into view. That observatory was still there‚ unchanged. The two stood side by side‚ quietly holding hands while listening to the sound of the waves.
The ring softly sparkled in the light.
Chapter several years later: Farewell and reunion
At the end of spring‚ the scent of rain lingered in the town. Saya stood motionless on the station platform.
In her hand was a mug that still held a trace of warmth. It was the one Yuto had been holding just a few minutes earlier. “Let’s take some distance for a while.” Those words were mixed with kindness and hesitation. The busyness of work‚ the times they missed each other‚ and the silence between them. Day by day‚ the two were gradually losing their words. The parting was not a fight. It was simply a quiet‚ necessary choice. After that‚ Saya walked alone. She stopped going to the sea on weekends. The ring remained tucked away deep in a drawer. But she hadn’t forgotten him. One day‚ on her way home from work at a bookstore‚ she happened to spot him. He hadn’t changed. Or rather‚ he looked a little thinner. He noticed Saya too. “Long time no see.” “…Yeah.” Their words were few. But looking into each other’s eyes‚ they understood. It wasn’t over yet between them. “Want to walk for a bit?” His voice was as quiet as the seaside that night. The two walked side by side.
The lights of the town gently connected the past and the present. “Do you still have the ring?” “Yeah. It’s put away‚ though.” “Me too… I often remember that night.” After a silence‚ Saya stopped walking. Then she said softly‚ “Shall we try starting again from the weekend?” Yuto’s eyes widened in surprise‚ but he soon smiled. “This time‚ I want to cherish not just the weekends‚ but every day.” The two began walking again. The ring had not yet returned to her finger. But a light had been rekindled in their hearts.
Future Arc: [The Season of Two]
Spring had passed‚ and the signs of summer were beginning to fill the town. Saya was watering the potted plants on the balcony while gazing at the curtains swaying in the wind.
Inside the room‚ Yuto was preparing breakfast. The fragrant smell of toast and the steam from the coffee enveloped the quiet morning. “Where should we go today?” “I want to go to the sea again after so long. I wonder if that observatory is still there.” “It is. It’s our ‘place we returned to‚’ after all.” The ring was once again on Saya’s left hand. The one he gently offered after their reunion that night. “Will you accept it again?” To those words‚ she nodded without saying anything. Weekends had once been “time spent waiting.” Then they became “the beginning‚” and now they had become “time spent nurturing.” When they arrived at the seaside observatory‚ a gentle wind was blowing. The two sat side by side‚ gazing at the distant horizon.
“Hey‚ Yuto-kun.” “Yeah.” “We’ve overcome so many seasons‚ haven’t we?” “We have. The tears of spring‚ the silence of summer‚ the reunion of autumn‚ and the hesitation of winter.” “But now‚ I feel like we’ve truly become ‘our seasons.’” Yuto smiled and took her hand. “Let’s keep overcoming seasons together. No matter how many times.” The sound of the waves gently enveloped their silence. The sky was high‚ and the clouds drifted slowly. The ring quietly sparkled in the light. It had become not a memory of the weekend‚ but a promise for the future.
Future Arc: [The Light Passed Down Through Generations (Saya's Narration)]
One autumn day‚ Saya was sitting across from a young woman in a small cafe.
The woman was a junior from work who had just gone through a breakup with her boyfriend. Saya saw in her eyes the same shadow she once had‚ and began to speak softly. “You know‚ back then I used to cry every weekend too. I’d wait for someone’s message and just keep staring at my phone.” The junior looked at her with wide eyes. “You‚ Saya-san… were like that?” “Yeah. I pretended to be smiling‚ but my heart was always left behind.” Running her finger along the rim of her cup‚ Saya continued. “But one day‚ someone called out to me. ‘Let’s run to the sea.’ In his beat-up car.” “Is that… your husband now?” Saya smiled. “Yes. He didn’t say anything‚ he was just there beside me. That night‚ he gave me a ring. ‘Even if it’s the first and the last‚ it’s fine‚’ he said.” The junior quietly caught her breath. “And then what happened?” “I accepted the ring. Not to let go of the past‚ but to choose the future. The weekend-only promise became a daily bond.” Outside the window‚ the trees swayed in the wind. Saya gently touched the ring on her left hand.
“You know‚ people become stronger by becoming someone who can wait for others‚ rather than someone who is waited for. And those who can notice someone’s tears can surely become someone’s light.” The junior’s eyes were slightly teary. “I wonder if I can walk like that too.” “Of course. Your weekend has only just begun.” At those words‚ the junior nodded slightly. Then the two quietly sipped from their cups. A story becomes someone’s light when it is passed on. Saya’s weekend had already become someone else’s beginning.
